Gillan Teases Who Finale

The Geeky Girls couldn't help skiving for 30 minutes or so this morning when we found out Doctor Who star Karen Gillan was doing a webchat with The Times. We logged on to see what she had to say, and pose a few cheeky questions of our own.

A very well behaved Karen kept reasonably schtum when it came to spoilers, but she did reveal a couple of hints about Doctor Who's upcoming finale. "The finale episodes were definitely my fave to film," she said. "The end of the series is very, very exciting. I'll say three words: 'horses' and 'time crack'!"

Well, the 'time crack' clue is no surprise - that one's been floating around since the beginning of the series. But what's all this about horses? Horsemen of the apocalypse maybe? Or just a ruse from the feisty redhead.

Karen went on to reveal that Stephen Moffat is busy penning the script for the Christmas special, but sadly for fans of Arthur Darvill the actress confirmed that we won't be seeing Amy's love Rory again. In her words, Rory is "deceased". Boo.

Karen went on to discuss Matt Smith's portrayal of the Doctor, describing him as reckless. "He does have a bit of a temper," she said, adding: "Not sure about most angry ever. William Hartnell was quite grumpy!"

And as for Amy entering the world of Torchwood (should another series happen), Karen was intrigued by the idea of her character meeting Captain Jack (well, who could blame her?). "If the storyline was good, then why not?" she said when asked if she'd be up for a cameo. "Torchwood is great."

Die hard fans can read back the full web chat here.

Alex Kingston To Return For Doctor Who Finale

Oh goody! Alex Kingston will be reprising her role as River Song for the finale of Doctor Who!

The Beeb have announced that the two-part story will be penned by series mastermind, Steven Moffat.

The episodes will air on June 19th and June 26th on BBC One, titled “The Pandorica Opens” and “The Big Bang” respectively.

In case you’ve banged your head and forgotten, River Song is an archaeologist who claims to be married to the Doctor. The Doctor Who Confidential refers to her as the “companion-to-come”. Secretly, we rather liked the idea of her being the next Doctor..

According to reports, the finale episode will feature The Daleks (retro, silver and gold or all colours of the rainbow – who knows), The Cybermen and The Sontarans.

Ooo – we can’t wait! We’ve very much enjoyed this series; the production, the cast and the story lines, but what about you? Let us know: Doctor Snooze or Doctor Wahoo?

Matt Smith To Star In The Sarah Jane Adventures

The BBC has announced plans for 11th Doctor Matt Smith to star in an upcoming episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

In the two-part story, penned by former Doctor Who boss Russell T. Davies, the Doctor will be reunited with Sarah Jane (Elisabeth Sladen) and fellow former companion Jo Grant (Katy Manning).

"It's a fantastic script and I can't wait to work with another Doctor and hope Matt has fun with us," said Sladen. "I've known Katy for ages and I am delighted to be working with her. I last met her in LA but this time we will be in Cardiff. LA was good but Cardiff is better."

Manning, who appeared alongside Third Doctor Jon Pertwee from 1971 to 1973, added: "Playing Jo Grant again is something I never really considered. I was gobsmacked when they told me and I am over the moon. What an incredible little treat."

Nikki Wilson, co-executive producer said: "Viewers are in for a real treat, with an action-packed story, full of Russell's usual wit and warmth, which takes the gang inside a secret base beneath Snowdon and introduces brand new vulture aliens, the mysterious Shansheeth. All this, plus a trip to an alien planet - a first for The Sarah Jane Adventures."

Hostility at New Doctor! But Don’t Worry, We’ll Adjust Say Researchers

According to internal BBC memos, the British public do not like change, especially when it comes to the good Doctor! But it’s okay Matt, take a deep breath, let it out and relax – you're not the first Doctor to go through this initial period of unrest.

Today the Beeb is publishing its extensive DW archives. The archives feature audience reactions to each new Doctor and they’re not exactly favourable!

When the first Doctor, William Hartnell, regenerated way back in ’66, audience opinion was not kind to his successor, Patrick Troughton. “Once a brilliant but eccentric scientist, he now comes over as a half-witted clown,” complained one viewer to the BBC’s Audience Research Department.

Another viewer grumbled: “I’m not sure that I really like his portrayal – I feel the part is exaggerated – whimsical even – I keep expecting him to take a great watch out of his pocket and mutter about being late like Alice’s White Rabbit.”

Jon Pertwee, Troughton’s predecessor, had a slightly better response, but a research report following his first appearance stated: “Reaction to this first episode of the new Dr Who series can hardly be described as enthusiastic.”

Even the most popular Doctor Who incarnation, Tom Baker, received a lukewarm  reception, with one viewer protesting, “General opinion was that the new Dr Who is a looney – he is an eccentric always, but the way it was presented made him stupid.”

Others hoped Pertwee would (somehow!) return: “My two boys aged four and six were distressed about the change of Dr Who. They were very excited by the episode, but hope the Doctor will change back again next week.”

Here at Geeky Girl HQ, we’ve not come across much negative press or fan blogging for the new Doctor or the revamped format and production team. But there has been criticism for Amy Pond’s (played by Karen Gillan) wardrobe!

One viewer complained: “"They've completely demeaned Doctor Who by replacing good episode stories with slutty girls."

But Karen Gillan defended the decision to dress in a mini skirt, saying: 'I tried on different things and when it came to the short skirts, I just thought it was right. I mean, look down most high streets and girls Amy's age wear that. It's not that weird."

Darn tooting!

Doctor Who Spoilers - The Beast Below

Having spent our lunch hour today transfixed by Matt Smith's second Doctor Who episode, The Beast Below, we thought it only right to share a sneak peek of what's in store for Amy Pond's first proper adventure with the Time Lord.

Penned by show boss (and genius) Steven Moffat, the episode sees the Doctor and Amy travel far into the future to a time when the Earth has been destroyed and England's inhabitants live aboard the Starship UK.

But it's not all fun, games and wonderment in space (though Amy does a lot of the wide-eyed staring again). There are secrets in the bowles of the starship, and the Doctor is determined to discover the truth.

Below are a few spoiler pics for you to peruse.

Matt Smith Stopped at Heathrow For Carrying Sonic Screwdriver

Tehe, this made us titter! Whilst on his way to Belfast, new Doctor Who, Matt Smith, was stopped by officials at Heathrow airport when they noticed a strange looking device in his luggage.

Checking his bags through security, X-ray technicians saw what appeared to be a rather futuristic looking “weapon” lodged in his luggage.

According to reports, Matt was extremely polite (you would be too if faced with a possible body cavity search) when questioned and explained the screwdriver was a prop to the assembled, bemused staff.

With staff clearly not au fait with the new time lord, Matt had to produce show promo material to prove who he was! Thankfully logic prevailed and Matt was allowed to go on his merry way.

Matt told the Radio Times he keeps his beloved sonic screwdriver with him at all times for extra practice. He said, ''I've broken four of them ... I like to have it about my person at all times, just twirling it around and flicking it. It's all part of the magic, isn't it?”.

We’ll help you train any day, Doctor.

Matt also has the glorious honour of being featured in our monthly Man of the Month poll! So if he and his natty bow tie rocked your world with his debut in Saturday’s Doctor Who, we urge you to vote!

The Tardis Gets A Makeover!

First a new Doctor, then a new companion and now a newly remodeled Tardis! Moffat, you’re spoiling us. The Radio Times has released world-exclusive images of the brand spanking new Tardis for your viewing pleasure.

Geeky Girls like the new look of the Tardis – we feel it has been long due a style overhaul. In our humble opinion the old time machine looked far too dark and dingy in contrast to the perpetually bright and cheerful character of the Doctor.

The new version is bright, futuristic but still has hints and fixtures from the old Tardis – like the central hexagonal control panel. And there are new bits too! Notice the gang ways leading into new and unexplored parts of the Tardis? Will we be seeing more of the Tardis in future? Intriguing!

We also like the image of the new 11th Doctor and his companion, Amy Pond. This pair look very twenty-ten darling.

Doctor Who starts on Saturday 3 April at 6:20pm on BBC1 and BBC HD!

First Look: Doctor Who Episode 1

There are only 11 days left until Matt Smith makes his glorious debut as the Doctor (BBC1 / HD: Sat 3 Apr).

We've already told you why we think you should tune in, but as an additional treat we've hunted down a few spoiler pics to get you excited about the new series.

Steven Moffat: "No Cameos For New Doctor Who"

Since we shared a lift with Steven Moffat at last week's Doctor Who launch, we can't help but feel a kind of kinship with the newly crowned king of TV's biggest sci-fi show.

Which doesn't have anything to do with our latest bit of Who-related news whatsoever, but we're proud to have spent a full minute (ish) in the company of such a man without a) squealing with delight and asking for his autograph or b) dropping to one knee and begging him for a job.

ANYWAY.

In an interview with someone else (The Guardian, if you must know), The Moff has revealed that he's resisted temptation to include cameos from previous Doctor Who characters in this new series.

"The more you back-reference, the more it feels like a sequel and the sequel is never as good as the original," he explained.

"Old favourites can return, provided you can do something new and exciting with them. There are no past characters coming back in this series, but I imagine that kids would love to see Captain Jack meet the new Doctor."

Kids? Never mind the kids Steven. WE would LOVE to see Captain Jack meet the new Doctor.

But in all seriousness, while we love a good comeback maybe it'll be nice to watch a series finale without suffering the schmaltzy, sentimental reunion so favoured by Russell T. Davies. Though that's not to say we wouldn't appreciate an appearance from Rose Tyler et al at some point...

Five Reasons To Watch Doctor Who Series Five

The Geeky Girls braved the rain in Cardiff on Thursday night to walk the Tardis-blue carpet and get a first look at Matt Smith's debut episode of Doctor Who, The Eleventh Hour, and we're pleased to report that it was nothing short of spectacular. Smith's manic and magical turn as the 906-year-old Doctor; Karen Gillan's charming but ballsy new companion, and Steven Moffat's perfectly judged introductory script all combine to produce a satisfying and enjoyable series opener.

We could wax lyrical about the greatness of the new Doctor Who all day, but we'll keep it short and sweet with our top five reasons to tune in to the new series (BBC1 / HD: Sat 3 Apr).

1. Amelia Pond
Amelia, it doesn't take too much guessing, is Amy Pond. And while we don't want to give too much away about how the pair meet, we will say that from the off flame-haired Amelia is fearless, feisty and fun. She'll be brilliant this companion, if she lets go of her crush on the Doctor.

2. Moffat's Monsters
The first monster of the Moffat-era Whoniverse is the rather disappointing and unremarkable Multiform - an alien that can turn itself into anything (or anyone - remember that). But while in this first episode the monster is a simple and obvious plot device, the new trailer hints at much more weird and wonderful things to come from the mind of the Moff - once all the setting up and establishing stuff is done with. Weeping Angels, Daleks, Cybermen, Silurians and vampires are all on the way.

3. Adult Humour
There's no point in pretending that Doctor Who isn't intended for family viewing, but this regenerated show is happy to include the odd racy joke, innuendo, or pun in the hope that it'll go over the heads of its younger audience. From potential porn on a laptop and a cameo from a very frisky Sir Patrick Moore to a bit of semi-gratuitous (off-screen of course) nudity from the 11th Doctor, we hope that the fifth series is starting as it means to go on.

4. The Third Wheel
Amy Pond isn't the first companion to have a "sort of" boyfriend, and while there'll always be a place in our hearts for Mickey Smith we think Rory might take his mantle as the best third wheel in Doctor Who history. He's a nurse, he drives a mini, he's clearly clever, the Doctor doesn't find him attractive and he's known Amy since childhood - when she used to make him dress up as the Time Lord (not in a kinky way, that'd be obscene). Trust us, he's one to watch.

5. The Doctor
The Geeky Girls were devotees of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant for their fine performances in the role, but Matt Smith has managed what many thought was impossible - he's made the part his own. As the Doctor, Matt is energetic, aggressive, manic and reckless. He brings a delightful energy and enthusiasm to the Time Lord that was so lacking in David Tennant's final few episodes. In short, he is the Doctor. We're a little bit in love with him. Can you tell?

Check out the sneak peek at the fifth series below for a glimpse at what's in store.

Karen Gillan Reveals Doctor Who Romance

Say it ain't so Steven Moffat.

New Doctor Who companion Karen Gillan has revealed that there's a spark of romance between her character Amy Pond and Matt Smith's Doctor.

“There is kissing. It is fair to say she is attracted to the Doctor," the actress told Grazia magazine. "I don't think she's in love with him. She's not this love sick puppy following him around. It will pan out as you watch the series.

"She has a love for him, a really deep love for him. But not romantic.
Hmm... here's hoping that we won't have to sit through yet another Doctor-companion-the universe love triangle.

Karen has also revealed a little more about her character, explaining Amy's preference for teeny-tiny skirts.

"This Doctor is pretty good. As, I've said, is Amy. She gets to wear all these small skirts, which I will admit was very cold, but also very cool.

"They originally wanted to put me in trousers, but I did say I'd like to wear a skirt because - you'll understand when you watch it. Actually I think I love Amy. I'm in love with her. I want to be her.

"Amy's a sassy lady, funny and passionate, and her relationship with The Doctor has a really interesting dynamic."

Wenger Compares Doctor Who To Twilight And Harry Potter

Doctor Who executive producer Piers Wenger has made some pretty big claims concerning the new series of the Beeb's flagship sci fi show.

In an interview with Doctor Who Magazine, Piers, who is working alongside fellow execs Steven Moffat and Beth Willis for series five, revealed that the revamped show has a "fairy-tale feel".

"We just wanted to make the show look as up-to-date as it possibly could," he explained. "One of the qualities in Steven's writing, and one of Steven's natural tendencies as a writer, is to write these strange, dark, glittering fairy tales.

"We wanted to give the look of the series a slightly more storybook, fairy-tale feel.

"It wasn't about suddenly becoming Tim Burton, but it was finding a pinch of that, a pinch of Twilight, a pinch of Harry Potter - but it's still absolutely, slap-bang, mainstream Doctor Who.

"It's a bigger, more brilliant challenge," he added. "Just the stories, by nature, have to be slightly baffling, but have a really rigorous logic behind why they're baffling - and they should be baffling in a good way."

Hmm... are we the only ones beginning to worry that Who might have lost its way?

James Corden For Doctor Who?

Psst... word is that Gavin & Stacey star James Corden has landed a guest spot in Doctor Who.

According to The Sun, the actor was spotted reading his script on a train whilst en route to the set in Cardiff.

Hmm... we're sure the BBC's professional secret keepers will love that.

A show insider told the tabloid: "We normally keep our guest stars under wraps but you can't hide a bloke like James.

"And now he's not coming to Wales for Gavin & Stacey anymore, it's pretty obvious why he is here. We're just delighted to have James on board. He is a great actor and he'll be a perfect fit for the new Doctor Who."

As always, the Beeb have refused to comment, which we're taking as confirmation.

Check Out The New Doctor Who Trailer!

Doctor Who exploded back onto our screens last night with a new trailer that offered a tantalising glimpse of the new series.

The teaser sees the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) and his companion Amy (Karen Gillan) fly through a vortex. Amy seems to do a lot of screaming as the Doctor spies a few old foes and wrestles with an angry looking Weeping Angel.

Hmm... the Geeky Girls would've liked a few more clues about what's in store for the series, but what do you think?

Doctor Who To Face Daleks, Star Whale And "Silent Menace"

A new BBC press release has hinted that Matt Smith's eleventh Doctor is set to face a whole host of nasties when the fifth series of Doctor Who hits screens this Easter.

Matt's first adventure in the Tardis will be an hour-long episode scripted by Steven Moffat, titled The Eleventh Hour.

The release also reveals that the eleventh Doctor and new companion Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) will explore 16th century Venice, France during the 1890s and the United Kingdom in the far future, now an entire nation floating in space.

It goes on to hint that the Time Lord's long time enemies the Daleks are hatching a new master plan from the heart of war-torn London in the 1940s.

But they are not the only strange creatures the Doctor and Amy must face – there are also alien vampires, humanoid reptiles, old enemies such as the Weeping Angels and Silurians (last seen in 1984), a Star Whale, and a silent menace that follows Amy and the Doctor around wherever they go…

Steven Moffat On Doctor Who

New Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat has revealed that running the show has taken over his life.

"There will be a number of things I'll never, ever write, because I'm doing Doctor Who. There will be a number of things I'll never do because I'm doing Doctor Who," he told the show's official magazine. "Doctor Who is like an eclipse. It blocks out the sun. It's knackering."

The executive producer also admitted that Matt Smith did not fit his "imaginary profile" of the Doctor. "I thought it's mid-30s to mid-40s," he said. "I still maintain that's where most of your Doctors will be, in that age group - young enough to run, but old enough to look like they can be King of the Universe."

But on a more positive note the showrunner went on to proudly claim that his leading cast are "exactly right" for the show.

"All credit to [casting director] Andy Pryor, everyone we saw for the role of Amy was terrific. Genuinely, every single one of them. There wasn't a single bad audition, they were all brilliant.

"Karen was the very last person we saw and she just fitted better. She was just exactly right. And exactly right with Matt, in that she's a bit kookier, I suppose. A bit madder. To this day, I still don't know how Karen didn't know she had got the part. She didn't have a clue. We were all making faces at each other and waving cos she was just so good, so brilliant!"

In other exciting Doctor Who news, the titles and writers of the first three episodes have now been confirmed. The first two episodes of the Matt Smith era, The Eleventh Hour and The Beast Below, will be penned by Steven himself while Mark Gatiss, who appeared as Professor Lazarus in The Lazarus Experiment, has written episode three, Victory Of The Daleks.

Other writers confirmed for Eleventh Doctor's first series include Simon Nye, Chris Chibnall, Gareth Roberts, Toby Whithouse and Richard Curtis.

And Corlaine author Neil Gaiman is also on board. He cryptically told SFX this week: "While I know it's cruel to make you wait for things, in about 14 months from now, which is to say, NOT in the upcoming season but early in the one after that, it's quite possible that I might have written an episode."

He added: "And if I had, it would originally have been called The House of Nothing. But it definitely isn't called that anymore. Countdown. You've got about 14 months."

Ooh, we do love a good conundrum at Geeky Girl Towers.

Doctor Who to have THREE companions!

Remember the old joke? How many assistants can you fit into a Tardis?

Okay, that was rhetorical, but how many assistants has the good Doctor had at any one time? We only ever remember one full time assistant at the Doctor’s side, and maybe some occasional extras (like Mickey, played by Noel Clark, for example) but it seems our latest reincarnation of Doctor Who is somewhat on the greedy side.

Doctor Who boffs will know that little known actress, Karen Gillan, will play the Time Lords new assistant, kissogram Amy Pond, but apparently we have not one or even two new extra assistants to meet - we have THREE!

Step in to the mix Rory Williams, played by actor Arthur Darvill (see pic). Quick back story, Rory is Amy Pond’s boyfriend! When the Doctor discovers this, he can’t stand to split up the happy couple and so invites Rory to join them on their intergalactic adventures.

The third and final companion is still a mystery and after much digging, Geeky Girls have hit a brick wall, but fear not, as soon as we know, you’ll know.

Personally, we just hope that all these new companions don’t overload the show’s dynamics and make the whole thing seem over-crowded... But on consideration, we reckon this show is too well produced and written for that to happen. And you can quote us on that.
