Joss Whedon To Write AND Direct The Avengers film? Shut. Up.

We bring you joyous geeky news this morning. Variety has reported that not only will Joss Whedon be directing the new The Avengers film; he’ll also be rewriting Zak Penn’s original screen play!

Already a hugely respected writer (BtVS, Angel, DollHouseToy Story), Joss Whedon has recently spent time writing for various comic books, including Marvel’s X-Men and the continuing Buffy graphic novels. He has also just finished the script for horror flick, Cabin in the Woods.

While Serenity is the only film Whedon has directed, we think directing all those Buffy, Angel and Firefly episodes (the list just goes on and on people) should hold him in good stead.

Filming on The Avengers gets under way in early 2011 and already signed up are Robert Downey Jr (Iron Man), Chris Evans (Captain America) and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury). It’s rumoured that Edward Norton could reprise his Hulk role. The planned release date is May 2012.

This just sounds epic; an amazing library of possible story arcs, acting heavyweights in Downey and Jackson with Joss Whedon in charge of it all. It’s like our very own geeky nirvana.
