We hate to see a great film flounder, but alas, it seems that Matthew Vaughn’s Kick-Ass is not enjoying such a superhero welcome across the pond.
Kick-Ass had been predicted by most Hollywood guru types to earn a modest $30 million (and clear its production costs) in its opening US weekend, but it failed to hit even the $20 million mark.
We've not seen the US marketing campaign, but we reckon the complexities of marketing a film about child/teen super-heroes, which children and teenagers can’t actually see probably hasn’t helped, despite the online excitement.
Kick-Ass received an R rating in the US, where as the UK (rather generously) gave it a 15 certificate.
We hope Kick-Ass gets the viewing figures it deserves. 300, which also enjoyed massive online buzz and fan-boy interest made $210 million and we’d say Kick-Ass was better and more enjoyable than that!
